When you arrive at the Meet & Greet, spend a few minutes talking with the adopter first; this gives your pet time to sniff and investigate them at his or her own pace.
- Some pets, especially friendly dogs, will want to give the potential adopter(s) lots of enthusiastic attention right away, and that’s OK!
- Don't be alarmed if your pet (usually those more reserved dogs or cats in carriers) needs some time to warm up to the potential adopter, meeting someone new isn't always easy for our shy pets.
- If your pet likes treats, bring some with you to give to the potential adopter to help your pet warm up to them. Treats can be a great ice-breaker!
- During your Meet & Greet, it's important the potential adopter is able to spend time attempting to bond with your pet; give them some space and silently observe the interaction.
- Always feel free to ask the the potential adopter as many questions as you have. Your questions also serve as a way of letting them know you care deeply for your pet and want to do your best to ensure it's a good fit, and that they'll be safe, happy, and loved in their new home.
- The potential adopter will likely have more questions for you as well, which is a good sign.
So, how do you know if it’s a match? It sounds cliché, but you’ll know when it’s right.
However, this is a big decision you're making on behalf of your pet and their future well-being. We recommend not rushing the decision. There is no pressure for you or the potential adopter to make a decision during the Meet & Greet. Always trust your gut, if something doesn't feel right, move on.
