There are two ways Rehome knows if a shelter or rescue referred a pet owner to list their pet for adoption on Rehome:
1. Owner selects who referred them
When an owner is first creating their account to add their pet to Rehome, in the last step (Step 4) the owner is asked "How did you hear about us?" If they select Shelter or Rescue Organization, they can then choose any shelter or rescue with an account on Adopt-a-Pet.com.
The pet owner Step 4 question looks like this:
Note: Owners can not change their answer after they click "Next" in Step 4, as that completes creating their account and adds the pet. Referral is tracked is per owner account (per owner email) so is locked in for every pet that owner adds.
2. Owner clicked a referral URL
Rehome also offers each shelter/rescue their own unique Rehome referral link. If a pet owner clicks a referral link, they don't see the "how did you hear about us" question. They are locked in automatically to the referring shelter/rescue.
Shelter and rescue organizations can get their unique referring link, and choose from several banners, in their online Rehome Tool Kit. Access your organization's Tool Kit by logging in to your Adopt-a-Pet.com shelter/rescue account, then clicking on the refer to Rehome banner on the right of the shelter Admin Home page. It looks like this:
