If you are an adopter and you applied to adopt a Private Owner pet, here's how to cancel the adoption depending on how far along in the process you are:
1. You applied to adopt
If you applied for a pet and haven't heard from the owner yet, you don't need to do anything. That's right! You're all set. While there is no way to withdraw or cancel an application after you submitted it, not to worry. If the pet owner emails or calls you, you can let them know you are no longer interested.
2. You applied and spoke to the owner
If you applied and the owner called you and you had planned a meeting, please be courteous and contact the owner back to cancel the meeting, and let them know you no longer want the pet.
3. You applied, spoke, and met the pet
If you met the pet and went home to sleep on it (as Rehome recommends), please politely contact the owner to let them know you are no longer interested, so they can move on to other applicants.
4. You applied, spoke, met, then paid Rehome and signed the contract
Sometimes something very unexpected happens, and you have to cancel an adoption even after correctly following all Rehome's adoption steps. Be sure to contact the owner to let them know you are cancelling the adoption. Then you can request an adoption fee refund from Rehome. Please be aware that our nonprofit has to pay the credit card service a refund fee. This one reason we ask you meet and think about it overnight before finalizing by paying and signing. To request a refund, contact Rehome by replying to the "Congrats" email that Rehome sent you, or click the blue question mark on this page.
#4 is the only time you need to let Rehome know you want to cancel.
