Rehome-to-Foster, is a life-saving program under the Rehome by Adopt a Pet umbrella. Rehome-to-Foster connects pet parents with foster homes capable of acting as intermediaries in the pet adoption process; with the aim of keeping more pets out of shelters and giving their previous guardians peace of mind.
Whether due to an imminent move, a change in rental policies, human medical concerns, or domestic violence, pet parents faced with the difficult decision to rehome their pet can often find themselves on a strict deadline to secure new loving home for their furry family members.
Because the rehoming process is one that routinely takes several weeks to complete, pet parents in more urgent situations may lack the time needed to house their pet and oversee their adoption. Rehome-to-Foster intends to fill this gap in the supported self rehoming process by connecting pet parents in need with foster homes in their community that are willing and able to care for their pets on an interim basis.
In the years since its launch, Rehome by Adopt a Pet has helped thousands of pets find other loving families by giving pet parents the tools and information to safely rehome their pets themselves. This innovative process of peer-to-peer rehoming is not only less stressful for the pet, it also takes some pressure off animal welfare organizations that have traditionally carried the bulk of this responsibility.
Similar to how Rehome has helped revolutionize the pet rehoming and adoption process, we believe that providing easy access to foster care options will result in fewer pet parents needing to relinquish their pets to shelters, while increasing the number of successful adoptions completed through Rehome.
In addition to the needs of pet parents, we have seen public awareness regarding pet adoption and the necessity of foster homes growing in the wake of the pandemic. However, due to limited resources, fostering directly through a local shelter or rescue organization is not always an option.
With our nationwide reach, Rehome to Foster is in the unique position to connect interested foster families directly with pets in need of temporary housing, while supporting them and equipping them with the tools they need to complete adoptions through the existing Adopt a Pet Rehome system.
By providing a trusted platform to facilitate peer-to-peer fostering, we hope to greatly reduce the number of family pets facing euthanasia, while allowing overburdened and underfunded shelters the ability to focus their resources on caring for the stray and homeless pets that need them most.
